Sports writing for the rest of us

Posted in Uncategorized by antisociology on July 16, 2008

Good sports writing is hard to find. So many of the mainstream sporting press is kind of fluffy. It seems to be aimed more at the watchers than the doers. Running Times was a nice diamond in the rough. It’s pages are filled with great opinion articles and race reports in addition to the usual litany of training tips and programs.

The Everyday Athlete is a blog written by one Heidi Swift who also writes for the Oregonian. Little Girl Run Fast. Little Girl Break Eight. Smash! is a post about those days when running comes effortlessly. I think part of my attraction comes from the writing. Maybe most of it, actually. And then there’s the fact that Ms. Swift writes about challenges and events that aren’t too far from my own. Give it a go, and let me know what you think.

Got a good running comment from a scary looking guy on a bike on Harlem Hill yesterday:

“Five more miles! Five more miles! You got it! Five more miles!”

I suggested that we agree on three and the guy just laughed and said to have a good day.
